DOMINICA CURRENT & URGENT NEEDS
Feb 29 08
1.
$2,000 a month to feed 85 children and $1500 more to continue feeding
45
hungry kids with food from Starvingchildren.org The
Global Nutrition Alliance
report shows a deficiency of Vitamin A, B12 & C, Essential fatty acids,
Calcium. See under Latest news March 1st.
2.
some
extra shoes/sandals for after school. Size 3 to 12 especially. Dallas and
Canadian churches committed to regular shoes for school. Some books
of stickers Dominica uses to reward children. And
always towels, games,
toys,
medicine, vitamins
(even outdated), emergency kits, dolls,
cars, sweets, underwear, school art supplies, money so
Dominica can pay for bills at clinics like last
year dengue epidemic when 100+ died from it on the island.
3. Some monthly
sponsors (from $35 to $100/month) to educate 150 children ten
months of the year in order to free Dominica's mind to concentrate
more on the current problems of the orphanage/school. About $5,000/month
which includes books, uniforms back-pack are needed.
3.
12 more computers Pentium IV (
or better) and monitors, and
laptops as we are expanding our computer room and only 21 are
functioning right now. There is space for 35!
4. An extra $2,000 per month
will pay for extra classes of English (3 of them + Dominica), computers
$150x2, sowing, guitar and art etc.
She cannot raise tuition to include those. So $$$
for education have to come from
different sources.
Some pictures of the different English Classes and individual pictures of the children in
need of scholarship for this new school year are here
http://www.4dshift.com/Orphanage06/June06photos.html
5.
. Concrete the courtyard as required from the school district.
6. A bus
to transport the high school students to
their classes and for different activities of the school. Capacity 80
children. The actual van is not big enough to transport the kids and
use A LOT of gas.($4/gallon)
Dominica's goals are:
A children kinder garden for age 3 to 5
years old.
A Basic school from first to 7th grade.
A system of hygiene including showers and
washing clothes.
A kitchen department service with three
meal per day for 85 children and more.
A music class with piano and guitar for 32
adolescents to lift up their soul while learning how to play an
instrument.
An afternoon homework area for children
with low capacity.
A new system of growing plants and
vegetables.
An computer & information department with 45 students & an extra
teacher.
Afternoon English classes with 120
students.
A commitment to cover the costs of 25 of
our high school children.
Our Circle of Women in Crisis Project.
The costs for telephones,
electricity, salaries for 19 people, drinkable water, gas, general
maintenance , fluorescent lights for classrooms and security at night,
detergent, daily garbage pick-up, batteries for radio and piano,
vegetable, chicken, cereal, bread, oil, loan repayments.
All of these are our current activities
or expenses which we deal with on a daily basis. We would prefer to
have all these projects covered before starting a new one. After that
we can create or add new things. Blessings to you and your continuous
support - Dominica
*****
We also need to build
4 new classrooms (40 students) ea to recover our dining area which
transformed into 2 classrooms this year in order to fit all 365
children. Here is the 2007 budget given to Dominica by her
contractor: $35,000. It is very needed.

6 .
Right now, she feeds 85 children, but plan to cut back to 60 only when
dormitories open. . Yasset and Marcos
waiting for food on the picture as the dining room turned into 4
classrooms.
What is always needed: bathing suits, towels, games.
11. Better
protection around
the whole area,
(orphanage side) wires etc... to protect the equipment (inverter,
refrigerators etc) That security budget is about $3,000.
13.
Build the second floor to the school. The proposal from an
architect runs $50,000
per floor. ($1 = about 33 PESOS)
The age of the 104 children are
roughly:
3
to 4 years old:
3 girls and 5 boys
5
to 7 years old: 15 girls and
11 boys.
8 to 10 yrs old:
24
girls, 19 boys
11 years old to 13:
3 girl and 7
boys
14 years of age to 17:
10 girls and 7 boys

Here are Dominica's
other smaller wishes/dreams
a)
Pay for
1 more computer teacher (1 technician)
@ $180/month. Dominica wants to train some children to be
technicians.
c)
Pay for 1 more
English teachers
(+ Dominica who can work with different grades at the same time!)
Dominica wants
to offer 4 levels . So each teacher will cost $150/month.
for 4 hours a day to different groups/classes
d) Internet at school
$100/month for the computer room.
e)
Bring in more sponsors. A child at $100/month covers his
food/education/books/ clothes/medicine/snacks in the morning or clinic bills if child is sick.
f) Also,
Dominica is training 17 kids to be teachers one day and she would like to
start another orphanage if possible, so they
find a job. Julissa + Mayellis & 2 more are already taking care of small children in the morning
and studying in the afternoon. As Dominica wants orphans to give back
to the school that raised them!
